Capricorn Coast events get major funds from government

AN announcement by Minister for Tourism and Major Events Kate Jones has confirmed $120,000 worth of funding as part Tourism and Events Queensland's (TEQ) second round of the Queensland Destination Events Program (QDEP) for five major events within the Capricorn region.

Events in the Capricorn Region supported under Round 2 of the QDEP include the Capricorn Food and Wine Festival (September 16-18) with $10,000, the Capricorn Coast Running Festival (October 2) with $10,000, Gemfest - Festival of Gems (August 11-14) receiving $90,000 and the Rockhampton River Festival (July 15-17) receiving $10,000.

Minister Jones said the QDEP supported high-value regional events which contributed to Queensland's $23 billion tourism industry.

"The Palaszczuk Government is committed to growing our tourism industry because that means more jobs for Queenslanders," Ms Jones said.

"Local events help drive visitation to Queensland's tourism regions, support local economies and create more local jobs.

"In conjunction with the It's Live! in Queensland major event calendar, these events are an important contributor to our tourism growth."

Capricorn Enterprise CEO Mary Carroll said they were thrilled with this result and it once again proved that our region's events were succeeding in a very competitive tourism environment.

"When new and existing events are scoring so well on a statewide scale, it's easy to see why the region's event tourism is continuing to grow," Ms Carroll said.

"We would like to congratulate the committees behind the funded events and all those who have contributed in various ways to make these events happen."

QDEP Round Three applications are open until March 16 for events held between October 3, 2016 and October 8, 2017.
