CANDY Burndred only recently moved to Yeppoon and the Capricornia Food and Wine Festival proved the perfect introduction to the region.

She and her partner Luke McNamara were among the thousands who indulged in gourmet food and wine at the three-day Rockhampton festival, which was staged on the riverbank along Victoria Pde.

"I think it's great," Candy said yesterday, as she and Luke prepared to tackle a delicious looking plate of food from the Smoking Yak.

"And the venue is perfect, it's beautiful."

Event director Tim Buchholz was thrilled with the community response to the festival, which was held in Rockhampton for the first time. It was previously staged in Yeppoon.

He is expecting final attendance figures to be close to 5000.

"It's just been a wonderful thing and I look forward to doing it again next year," he said.

"All the signature events sold solidly which, for a first-time event, is amazing.

"I am just so impressed that people got out and supported it."

Tim said about 900 people attended on Friday, close to 3000 on Saturday and patrons were flowing through in good numbers again yesterday.

The program featured signature dining experiences, food and wine master classes, interactive cooking classes and a take on television show Ready Steady Cook, aptly renamed Rocky Steady Cook.

Show host Peter Everett was gushing in his praise for the festival - and for the city of Rockhampton.

"I'm loving it here," he said. "From the day I've arrived, everyone has been so welcoming.

"It's a very unique place. I don't know if everyone realises how special this town is."
