'Captain Dragan' wins latest appeal against extradition

A FUGITIVE found hiding on the Coffs Coast in 2010 while the subject of a world wide manhunt has had an extradition order to face war crimes charges in Croatia set aside.

Dragan Vasiljokovic, also known as Daniel Snedden or Captain Dragan, won his latest Federal Court appeal after lawyers claimed he had been denied procedural fairness in a long fight to remain in Australia.

Born in Belgrade but an Australian citizen, Mr Vasiljokovic has been accused of killing, torturing and raping civilians while he was a Serbian paramilitary commander during the 1990s Balkans conflict.

He was first arrested by Australian Federal Police in 2006 while living in Perth under an assumed name and working as a golf coach but was released in 2009 when the Federal Court ruled he could not get a fair trial in Croatia.

He then went on the run and was tracked down by the AFP, first to Sawtell, and then to a property at Middle Boambee where he was being protected by friends.

After again escaping the closing net, Mr Vasiljokovic then headed north to Harwood where he was arrested on a yacht in April 2010.

In 2012, he lost the battle against extradition but a long-running series of appeals has again proved successful.

On Friday, Judge Davies ruled Mr Vasiljokovic was to remain in custody while further consideration of his case was made.
