Car explodes at City Centre Plaza

HUNDREDS of shoppers teemed into the street as one of Rockhampton’s busiest shopping centres was evacuated on Saturday morning.

Alarm sirens blared at the City Centre Plaza when a car parked beneath the complex burst into flames.

Police helped to clear the public areas as firefighters tackled the fire in the engine bay of a red 1990 Honda Civic.

A spokesman for the emergency services said it was thought a mechanical defect had caused the fire, which destroyed the car.

No-one was hurt and the evacuation had been quick and orderly, he said. The fire did not cause any damage to other vehicles or the structure of the car park or building and the centre was re-opened after about an hour.
