Initial report:

EMERGENCY Services have removed a car from the Tweed River, after it plunged into the water late Sunday night.

Police and Fire and Rescue personnel were on the scene about 1pm today to supervise the removal of the submerged vehicle, which plunged into the river on Tweed Valley Way, about 400m east of Tumbulgum.

The Mazda coupe emerged upside down as it was lifted slowly out of the water by a crane.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokeswoman said the HAZMAT crew from Tweed Heads was still on scene at 1.45pm.

"There was a slight spill in the river which we have rendered safe," she said.

She said some fuel had also spilled on the road and crews were tending to that hazard.

A 51-year-old male driver managed to escape from the car as it crashed into the water about 10.15pm on Sunday before pulling his 57-year-old female passenger out of the vehicle.

The woman was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

Police have been approached for comment.
