Carter weighs into live cattle debate

ROCKHAMPTON Regional Council Mayor Brad Carter has weighed  into the heated debate on the ill treatment of live Australian cattle exports.

Cr Carter urged the Government to put an end to live exports, saying the extreme cruelty shown towards these animals was disgraceful.

“These animals deserve to be treated humanely. We should be processing meat in Australian abattoirs, not internationally,” Cr Carter said.

“I understand that by banning live animal exports that there will be a short-term impact to the industry but these animals deserve to be treated with dignity and processed using stringent practices.

“I believe that manufacturing jobs should be retained in Australia - we should be exporting meat, not jobs.

“In this region alone we have two major meat exporting companies. There is no need to export live animals for processing and inflict the cruelty demonstrated in this week’s ABC Four Corners documentary, which exposed the inhumane treatment of Australian cattle.”
