South Rockhampton cemetery in grave condition

A MUCH-NEEDED drainage upgrade is under way at the heritage-listed South Rockhampton Cemetery.

Rockhampton Regional Council's parks and recreation committee chair Cr Cherie Rutherford said the area had needed attention for a while.

"Southside Cemetery is an important part of our community; it is our oldest cemetery and it is heritage listed as well," she said. "The drain running through the cemetery was previously silted up which was causing damage and undermining some headstones in the lower section during heavy storms."

The $68,000 upgrade would see the once- restricted water flow clear again.

Council crews have been on-site since September 9, building retaining walls near some old gravesites, de-silting the old watercourse, and installing sub-soil drainage. The works is expected to be completed over the next few weeks.
