Messi humiliates Courtois with two nutmeg goals in win

BARCELONA fans began the night by serenading the great Lionel Messi.

"God save the King," their banner ran sandwiched with a photo of one of his most iconic Champions League moments - that celebration after Barcelona's stunning revival against Paris Saint-Germain last season.

This night, this result against Chelsea wasn't the same magic of 12 months earlier, but it was a game defined by Messi.

"Chelsea were good on the night, but Barcelona have Messi and that was the difference," exclaimed commentator Martin Tyler on full-time.

Barcelona ran out 3-0 winners, to progress through to the quarter-finals 4-1 on aggregate, as Messi scored twice and played the key role in Ousmane Dembele's goal to notch up another UCL milestone.

Both of the Argentine's goals came in audacious fashion, nutmegging Thibaut Courtois twice - the first from an impossible angle on his right foot, the second to score his 100th goal in Europe's top club competition.

Elsewhere, Bayern Munich put three goals past Besiktas away from home to round out an 8-1 aggregate win and progress to the final eight.

BARCELONA 3-0 CHELSEA (Barca win 4-1 on aggregate)

Lionel Messi scored his 99th and 100th goals in the Champions League to send Barcelona through to the quarterfinals for the 11th straight season with a 3-0 win over Chelsea on Wednesday.

Barcelona advanced 4-1 on aggregate following a 1-1 first-leg draw in London. Messi beat Thibaut Courtois with two strikes between the Chelsea goalkeeper's legs from very tight angles on the side of the box.

He struck the opener three minutes into the match and took Barcelona's third goal in the 63rd.

But the most dazzling moment from the Argentina forward, who returned from missing one match for the birth of his third son on Saturday, came when he helped Ousmane Dembele score his first goal for Barcelona after he stole the ball from former Barcelona teammate Cesc Fabregas and darted past two would-be tacklers in the 20th.

Barcelona remained unbeaten in 25 straight Champions League matches at Camp Nou, a run that dates back to 2013. The hosts also stayed in contention for a rare treble of titles. They lead the Spanish league and have reached the final of the Copa del Rey.

Chelsea will now have to focus on finishing in the top four in the Premier League to return to tournament. It is currently in fifth place.

BESIKTAS 1-3 BAYERN MUNICH (Bayern win 8-1 on aggregate)

Bayern Munich easily advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals for the seventh straight year with a 3-1 win at Besiktas.

Thiago Alcantara, Gokhan Gonul's own goal and Sandro Wagner gave Bayern an 8-1 win on aggregate following the side's 5-0 victory in the first leg of the last-16 tie.

Despite the huge advantage, Bayern's Jupp Heynckes sent arguably his strongest side out.

Heynckes' team made the better start and Thomas Mueller crossed for Thiago to kill off any Besiktas hopes of a huge upset in the 18th minute. Bayern's away goal meant Besiktas needed seven in response to progress. The visitors' level consequently dropped and Besiktas improved toward the end of the half.

More concerning for Bayern was the injury Thiago picked up. The Spanish midfielder was visibly frustrated as he went off in the 35th for James Rodriguez.

Gonul started the second half with an own goal, minutes before a cat on the sideline caused referee Michael Oliver to halt the game briefly. It resumed after the cat jumped back over the advertising hoarding.

Love got the fans cheering again when Gonul pounced on a mistake from David Alaba to set the Brazilian up for Besiktas' consolation goal before the hour- mark.

Alaba atoned by setting up Wagner for Bayern's third in the final minutes. The home fans spent the last 15 minutes celebrating their side, singing and waving their flags in recognition of the team's campaign. Besiktas was playing in the knockout stages for the first time after topping its group ahead of Porto, Monaco and Leipzig.
