Chance for girls to give rugby a go in Rocky today

RUGBY UNION: Aspiring female rugby 7s players will receive an introduction to the game at a come and try day in Rockhampton today.

Hosted by Rugby Capricornia, it will be run by experienced coaches and is open to girls aged 13 to 15.

It will be held at Rugby Park, Normanby St, from 3.15pm to 6pm.

Trevor Robertson, the coach overseeing the development day, said it would cater for girls with all levels of experience.

"While it will focus on basic skills and offer a basic introduction to the game, we will ensure that it also suits girls who do have some playing experience,” he said.

"There has been a fair bit of interest among the local clubs so hopefully we will have a good turnout.”

Robertson said women's rugby was gaining traction across the region and it was likely a senior competition would be played in Rockhampton next year.

He is hoping today's event will be the catalyst for more players to join the ranks and that ultimately there will be more structured competitions for players of all ages.

Anyone interested can turn up on the day.
