Cherry-Evans field goal wins golden-point thriller
A DALY Cherry-Evans field goal has seen Manly win a dramatic contest against a gallant Canberra outfit at Lottoland on Sunday.
The Sea Eagles cruised to a 20-6 halftime lead, before a second-half fightback from the Raiders saw the match enter golden point after Jarrod Croker slotted an 80th minute penalty goal.
But following an error from Green Machine prop Junior Paulo in extra time, the home side seized their opportunity with Cherry-Evans stepping up to kick his side home 21-20.
It was the second time this season the two sides had met, the previous game also going the way of the Sea Eagles again in golden point courtesy of a Dylan Walker penalty goal.
Along with Cherry-Evans, Walker was once again one of the stars of the show, combining with his skipper for two tries in the first half.
The result improves the Sea Eagles' horrific home ground record this season.
Heading into the match, the club had only won one of six games at Lottoland.
But you wouldn't have known it, as they ran rampant in the opening 40 minutes with the final result seeing them climb to sixth on the competition ladder.
It was an unhappy afternoon for the Raiders from the get-go, and their day only got worse after they lost props Shannon Boyd (medial ligament) and Dunamis Lui (suspected ACL) to knee injuries midway through the first half.
The Sea Eagles opening the scoring in the fifth minute with Cherry-Evans throwing a cut-out ball to Walker, before the visitors hit back when Joey Leilua and Jordan Rapana linking up to put Blake Austin over in a 70-metre effort.
But for the remainder of the half, it was all the home side.
Off the back of a Jarrod Croker error in the 29th minute, Sea Eagles wrecking ball Marty Taupau monstered his way over next to the sticks.
Manly further extended their lead with two quick tries before the break, with young centre Brian Kelly showed great hands to put Jorge Taufua over in the corner before another Raiders error led to Walker setting up his skipper with a bit of brilliance.
