Child exploitation destroys career

A FORMER Rockhampton primary school teacher lost his job and was forced to sell his home after being found with child exploitation material.

The Rockhampton District Court heard Peter James Cameron was stood down without pay for a period of time.

Currently working as a payphone cleaner, Cameron pleaded guilty on Friday to one charge of possession of a small amount of child exploitation material on a USB stick in 2009.

The images were described as being at the lower end of the scale.

Cameron's lawyer, Dan Ryan, said his client had since suffered in his health and finances.

Mr Ryan tendered numerous references testifying to Cameron's good character to the court.

Judge Grant Britton said it was an "exceptional case" and he accepted Cameron was a highly respected teacher and member of the community.

"You have been shamed, you have lost your career and you are remorseful," Judge Britton told Cameron.

"I accept you will probably never offend again."

Judge Britton sentenced Cameron to six months probation.

No conviction was recorded.

The USB was forfeited to the Crown.
