Teen burnt in chemical explosion

A 14-YEAR-OLD boy has serious burns after larking about with chemicals which exploded in an empty Moura building on Tuesday.

The youth received burns to 30% of his body after he and other youngsters broke into the Moura Memorial Hall in Bell St, trashed it and tried to set it on fire.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said the group entered the building and was playing with chemicals before leaving the premises just before midday after the explosion.

Owner of the hall, Greg Lee, said the youths had smashed up bars and fridges.

"They broke in and tried to set fire to it," he said.

"They've done a fair bit of damage.

"All the doors are smashed, and the windows.

"Every toilet in the place has been smashed.

"All the old trophies inside were smashed.

"If one of them hadn't got burnt, the whole place would have been burnt down."

Mr Lee, a Biloela-based businessman, said he was told the burnt youth ran outside and a council worker saw him.

The boy was taken to Moura Hospital, then by air to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, in a serious condition on Tuesday afternoon.

Detectives from Biloela police station and scenes of crime officers from the Gladstone station were investigating the incident late Tuesday.

A Queensland Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said there was minor structural damage from the fire.

Mr Lee said he had plans for a revamp worth more than $1 million to reopen the building as a fully-licensed pub by the end of the year.
