WATCH: Chilling moment knifeman runs amok in lift
CONFRONTING CCTV footage of a shirtless man running amok inside a lift with a large butcher's knife has highlighted growing safety concerns for tenants residing in Sydney's housing commission blocks.
The frightening images, to be aired on Channel Nine's A Current Affair tonight, show the knife-wielding man screaming and stabbing the walls of an elevator at Surry Hills' Northcotte housing block.
In other footage, a tenant tries to break a CCTV camera with a metal bar before blacking out the device and in another, a man uses spray paint to blacken the camera.
NSW Minister for Social Housing Pru Goward revealed to ACA a raft of security measures aimed at monitoring unruly public housing tenants.
"We have many elderly tenants here who really clearly just want to live safe, quiet lives, and that's not always possible when you have anti-social elements visiting the building," Mrs Goward tells the program tonight.
"The anti-social behaviour stops them from enjoying their lives and feeling safe. That's what has to stop.
"It can mean vandalism. It can mean threats. It can mean personal violence. It can mean drug dealing, and we want to crack down on all of that."
