Chinese engineering firm moves in on Adani project

A CHINESE company has revealed it wants to help fund Adani's renewable energy and coal projects.

Although the China Machine Engineering Corporation said its interests were with renewable in Australia and coal mines in India, its president Zhang Chun had meetings earlier this year with Adani executive Praveen Khandelwal and Downer EDI's chief executive David Overall.

In a statement posted on its website on Thursday morning, CMEC said it hoped to cooperate with Adani and Downer EDI in projects and investments.

Downer EDI has the contract for the development of the Carmichael megamine in central Queensland and Adani has also reportedly started negotiating with Chinese investors.

A Senate estimate's hearing last week revealed the Turnbull Government has written to China to "dispel the misinformation" from the "radical left" about Adani's proposed mine as it seeks to ease concerns of potential investors in the project.

Mr Zhang said that CMEC has experience in development and construction of rail and mining projects and hoped to cooperate with Adani and Downer to take part in financing, construction and operation of relevant coal mines and railway projects.

"CMEC is willing to cooperate with Adani to take part in the development and construction of new energy (such as wind power) projects in Australia as well as traditional and new energy projects in India,'' Mr Zhang said.

"The three parties made in-depth discussions and communications about relevant projects,'' CMEC said.

The Hong Kong listed CMEC is an engineering contractor, but also has a large presence in trade and investment.

Adani is yet to comment.
