Ignoring climate change puts Australia at risk: report

A CENTRE for Policy Development report released today warns Australia faces a major national security threat if defence and security policies do not urgently start addressing climate change.

Interviews with experts from the United States and United Kingdom revealed Australia was lagging behind in taking necessary action to prepare its defence force for climate change.

CPD chief Travers McLeod said while militaries such as in the US and the UK take climate security extremely seriously, Australia was completely underprepared and falling further behind.

"Australia faces significant emerging security threats in a warming world," he said.

"We know we are extremely vulnerable to climatic impacts such as prolonged incidents of extreme heat, changed rainfall composition, sea level rises and more frequent natural disasters."

Mr McLeod said the Federal Government needed to urgently develop its military preparedness to respond to climate security crises, or face the consequences.
