Chilly conditions at course doesn't deter Andrew Martin

REIGNING City of Mackay Open winner Andrew Martin has soared to the lead after day one of the Pat O'Driscoll Real Estate/Tropical Auto Group Golf Classic.

Round one of the Pat O'Driscoll Real Estate/Tropical Auto Group Golf Classic got underway at Mercure Capricorn Resort yesterday morning with golfers taking to the course in some very chilly conditions.

Shooting an outstanding seven under par 65 around the Championship Course yesterday to take a one shot lead into the second round of competition today, Martin is leading the way from fellow Victorian Ryan Lynch who managed a six under par 66 around the resort course.

Having been in fine form over recent weeks and finishing his round off with two birdies and an eagle over his closing five holes, Martin was pleased with his performance.

"It's great to be atop the leaderboard after the opening round, though there is plenty of golf left and a lot of great players competing here this week," Martin said.

"Both of the Mercure courses are in great condition and if we continue to get the weather we experienced today in the opening round, I am sure the hot scoring will continue over the final three days."

Daniel Fox, Anthony Brown and Steven Jeffress, who was fresh off the plane after taking part in last week's British Open, all find themselves two shots adrift of Martin after 67s.

Round two of the Pat O'Driscoll Real Estate/Tropical Auto Group Golf Classic gets under way this morning at 6.40am with Martin due to tee off at 7am.
