Classy offerings at Rockhampton yearling sales

"CLASS personified” is an apt definition of the calibre of thoroughbred yearlings being offered at Rockhampton's Capricornia Yearling Sales (CYS) on Sunday, April 2.

That's a given after perusal of the 2017 catalogue of 93 yearlings that was posted online on the Central Queensland Thoroughbred Breeders Association website this week.

Queensland's leading studs will be represented at the Rockhampton Showgrounds-based sale conducted by selling agents Magic Millions.

The progeny of highly successful stallions such as Hinchinbrook; Sidereus; Hidden Dragon; Street Boss (USA); Instinction; Love Conquers All; Top Echelon; Wicked Style; Manhattan Rain and Mossman will be represented.

Top Echelon, sire of retired champ Our Boy Malachi has youngsters up for grabs while so too does champion sire Mossman, not forgetting the mover and shaker among the "studs” in Drumbeats.

Then there is stock by acclaimed first-season stallions such as Spirit of Boom, Mahisara, Your Song, Albrecht, Eurozone and Declaration Of War.

CQ thoroughbred breeders will be well represented. Names like Stewart Park, Riverside and Laurel Glen from out Alton Downs way will be proudly offering progeny of Man of Illusion, Love Conquers All; Rothesay and Carrara.

The little breeder is also well catered for such as the Sturgiss family from The Caves with progeny of Hemingway while the likes of others of their category are well represented.

Little wonder Rockhamp- ton's Jeff Leaver, convenor of the CYS is elated.

"I really believe this year's sale has reached a new high judging by the quality catalogue of yearlings on offer. It is very exciting for all connected with racing in CQ. Already I have been contacted by southern syndicators who intend to be buying here,” Leaver said.

The largest draft being offered is 18 yearlings by Oaklands Stud on the Darling Downs, a name synonymous with success and "meeting the market”.

"You bid you buy, that's our motto,” Oaklands Stud principal Neville Stewart said.

Among the Oaklands' draft is a half sister by Wicked Style to top Rockhampton colt The Bank Manager (Sidereus- Special Deposit) listed as Lot 8.

Tom Button's The Bank Manager, a winner of $30,700 to date and last start Eagle Farm placegetter, is entered to race in Brisbane on Satur- day. The Bank Manager is nominal favourite for the $116,000 CYS 2YO Classic (1200m) to be run at Callaghan Park, Rockhamp- ton, on the eve of the sale.
