Close encounter bodes well for season

THE Central Queensland Junior Rugby Union competition is still sorting itself out but there are promising signs in the under-16 age group.

Central Queensland development officer Daniel Hooper was unable to attend Saturday's round of games at Rugby Park but said reports were that the game between Frenchville and Brothers in the under-16s was very close.

Brothers has been selected as the benchmark team of this age-group but needed to battle hard with a Frenchville team that never lost touch.

In the end Brothers got home by 19-10.

At Tieri the Colts versus Central Highlands match was played as a part of a rugby union carnival, the event at which Hooper was attending.

While unable to view the whole game, Hooper was able to note the gap between the two teams was narrow as the final score of 19-15 to Colts suggests.

Yet to sort itself out is the under-14 division with teams still playing round robin matches.

Hooper said he hoped to have this age-group up and running very soon.

There was a major disappointment in the under-18 competition with Gladstone robbed of playing a game in front of its home supporters.

Gladstone was set to face Frenchville but Hooper said the visiting team forfeited on the morning of the match.

In the clash between Colts and Brothers, Hooper said it was Colts that claimed the honours.

This Saturday two of the main games should be between Frenchville and Colts in both the under-16s and 18s.

Will clubs please supply a list of coaches for the junior competition along with a contact phone numbers.

At Tieri, Hooper said it was a feast of rugby union with Queensland Reds players on call and some good matches played.

Hooper was a member of the Central Queensland Barbarians team that faced a Mackay team that had performed well in representative competition.

Barbarians caused a minor surprise by winning the challenge 29-25. In the feature game BMA spoiled the crowd's day by beating home town heroes Xstrata in their challenge match.
