Close kart encounters

SUCH WAS the quality of racing at the weekend, Rockhampton karter Matt Dicinoski, who was in sparkling form, had to settle for the runner-up spot in the Leopard Heavy division.

The two-day two track challenge was dedicated to Gladstone Kart Club member Norton Rogers who died in a road crash recently.

Racing started on Saturday at Gladstone and concluded at Fitzroy Park Raceway on Sunday.

Dicinoski battled throughout the weekend against Jason Faint, in particular, and it was the Gladstone racer who took away top honours.

“I was one point shy of the win,” Dicinoski lamented.

Both drivers recorded three wins but Faint gained victory when there was a countback on the minor placings.

“The kart had not been performing well and dad (Gavin) and I put our heads together and decided to get a new engine,” he said.

With the extra performance from the machine Dicinoski now looks forward to May and the second round of the Supercheap Auto series after a disappointing run in the opening round.

Also in the picture in this division were Scott Dagan and Michael Doherty who finished third and fourth overall.

Dicinoski’s Smart City team mate Mark “Chooky” Edwards still drives without luck.

While his lap times are good he again had problems when hit by another kart, losing his exhaust and missing out on a better finishing position.

One driver who enjoyed his weekend run was Roslyn Bay based John Martin.

Martin is a former karting champion and has progressed and currently races Formula 3.

At the weekend Martin was untouchable in the Clubman Light division, winning all races in his battle against Luke Flynn and Craig Butler.

“It was great to watch they were changing the lead all the time,” Formula K Kart Club publicity officer Kevin Doherty said.
