Fears after Coast dog 'savaged' by wild animals

A WITTA family's dog is lucky to be alive after ruthlessly being "savaged" by a wild dog or dingo in their own backyard.

Julie Dahlenburg lets both of her border collies run around the outskirts of her property on a daily basis.

But after Monday's attack on Gemma, she won't let them out of her sight.

"She was really cut up, savaged really. She was lucky to be alive her cuts were that bad," the distressed mother said of the attack every pet owner fears.

"She'd been bitten all over, her eyes, neck, belly, back legs, massive tears and bites.

"It is about 500m to the back fence and up a hill, so she is lucky to make it back to us.

"I know there are wild dogs or dingoes in the area but we have never seen them this close. Whatever it was must have been extremely vicious and aggressive."

The Dahlenburgs rushed their nine-year-old dog to Maleny Veterinary Services and, after two days, Gemma is fortunately making progress.

The vets had grave fears about her sustaining serious ligament damage.

"She was able to wag her tail when we approached her," Philip Dahlenburg said yesterday.

"The vets said she was doing much better than expected. But she is still really badly cut up and they can't cover them for fear of infection.

"The sheer shock of it all to her was very concerning.

"We were all really worried, it is a huge relief."
