Coast Fashion Festival back on after runway rescue

AFTER being thrown out like a cheap suit with the sudden closure last week of Palmer Coolum Resort, the Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival has a new place to call home.

Organiser Jacinta Richmond was left looking for alternate venues when the place the festival had called home for the past three years suddenly closed its doors.

However, two of the Coast's leading venues have pulled together to ensure the showpiece event will be able to keep up the momentum it has built over the past eight years.

The Caloundra Events Centre, in combination with Rumba Resort, will cater to the event that attracts interstate and international labels.

"It was a close call as we are also known as International Fashion Week, so we could have and may have ended up leaving the Sunshine Coast all together," Ms Richmond said.

"That is not something that I or the team wanted to see happen, so we are very excited with the result and the support of the Sunshine Coast."

The Events Centre will host the catwalk events, as well as the Trade Lounge, where guests can buy designer wear straight off the catwalk.

After meeting with the team on the southern end of the Coast, Ms Richmond said the decision was easy to take the event to Caloundra.

"David Shanahan at the Caloundra Events Centre put in a huge effort just to get me to venture down there and meet with him," she said.

"Once I was there, his level of support sky rocketed even further and the team and I were sold - they understand the event's vision and more.

"We are looking forward to further tapping into the Brisbane and Gold Coast markets and the closer proximity to the international airport for some of our guests."

Rumba Resort will double as the networking hub for the festival, with fashionistas from home and abroad set to mingle poolside at the popular Caloundra resort.

Rumba Resort director Bill Darby said he was proud of the way the venues had been able to work together to ensure the Coast had not lost a popular event, due to the sudden course of events at Palmer Coolum Resort.

"We've enjoyed an excellent partnership with the Events Centre," Mr Darby said.

"This is where the Sunshine Coast shows its true colours, the tourism industry binding together so that the Coast doesn't lose one of its events because of one bad seed."

Existing ticket holders had been notified of the change and their tickets were being honoured and upgraded as a result of the changes to the festival, which will get under way on October 17.
