Comets star in doubt after crash
CQ COMETS players don't even have to feel the heat of battle to suffer injury.
Two of the 17 players named earlier in the week have been forced out of today's game at Burleigh through vastly different types of injury.
Forward Alan Rothery, just making his way back into the Comets side after a lengthy suspension, looks set for another lengthy lay-off after a road crash.
Coach Wayne Barnett said he went to the hospital on Thursday night but was unable to see Rothery who was having further tests.
The loss of Rothery is a serious blow for the Comets as he was one of the better performing players last season, a genuine crowd favourite and the sort of player who lifts a side when it is under pressure.
Adding to Barnett's woes was the loss of the ever consistent Tyron Haynes who injured a hamstring at training.
There was some good news, however, as Mitchell Zornig is back in the Comets starting line up.
Zornig will start in the centres after coming through this week's training successfully.
“We have tested him all week on his ankle and he is okay,” Barnett said.
Barnett believes Burleigh will be tough to beat with statistics showing that on a head-to-head basis the Comets have only won twice in the teams' 28 meetings.
“I was involved in both of those wins and so I'm not too worried,” he said.
The match is a personal milestone for Comets prop James Crombie as he is making his 50th Intrust Super Cup appearance.
The CQ Comets squad to face Burleigh Bears today in the televised match on ABC at 2pm is:
1. Jimmy McConachy, 2. BJ Munns, 3. Dallas Williams, 4. Mitchell Zornig, 5. Clint Rothery, 6. Ian Webster, 7. Nat Bowman, 8. James Crombie, 9. Guy Ford, 10. Tim Glasby, 11. Guy Williams, 12. Brent Williams, 13 Marc Applegarth, 14. Nathan Barraclough, 15. Daniel Palavi, 16. John Clayton, 17. Tevita Latu.
