Mid-February deadline: Commission of Audit gets extension

THE Abbott Government's Commission of Audit will not report until mid-February, after Treasurer Joe Hockey gave it an extension on Tuesday.

Originally the audit was meant to file an initial report on its findings by the end of January, but this week the Commission wrote to Mr Hockey asking for the extension.

In a statement, Mr Hockey acknowledged the "short time frame" he first asked for, saying that the Audit was an essential step in getting the federal budget back under control.

"The government has granted this extension on the basis that it is important for this report to be as comprehensive as possible," Mr Hockey said.

"It is essential that the Commonwealth Government live within its means and begin to pay down Labor's debt, currently projected to rise to $667 billion if no action is taken.

Audit commissioner Tony Shepherd last week told a Senate inquiry that "everything is on the table" in terms of government spending that it could recommend changes or cuts to.
