Concerns over proposed flood levee raised at community forum

A NUMBER of residents from Fairy Bower went into a flood mitigation forum on Tuesday night believing it was a public consultation meeting to give the green light to a proposed Rockhampton flood levee.

But yesterday Rockhampton Mayor Margaret Strelow wanted to reassure residents Tuesday night's forum was an information session on floodplain management.

Fairy Bower resident Elaine Jones said she was concerned that a proposed Rockhampton levee would divert more floodwater onto her property and surrounding areas.

More than 100 residents and members of Rockhampton's business community attended the forum.

Floodplain Management Association president Ian Dinham gave a rundown on the pros and cons of various flood mitigation options.

Cr Strelow addressed those attendees who aired their concerns about the proposed levee, saying the council was open to any feedback from the public.

In relation to the proposed levee, Cr Strelow said the maps the council had released did not take into account the blockage the Main Roads Department had caused at the Yeppen Floodplain. The levee was the most cost-effective option for flood mitigation.
