Conferences, weddings booked but resort hits zero occupancy

STAFF at the Palmer Coolum Resort will be told this week whether or not they still have a job.

Sources have confirmed that all 200 staff members were told on Friday they would need to re-apply for jobs in a re-structured organisation.

Those not wanted will be paid award redundancy which tops out at 12 weeks' salary for those who have worked more than 10 years, plus all holiday and long-service entitlements.

It is understood most staff re-applied to protect their redundancy rights but that many are actively seeking better jobs elsewhere.

Staff has been doing their own calculations and fear as few as 50 jobs will be left after the purge.

A Queensland Nickel human resources team conducted department briefings of departments. The resort is believed to have significant forward conference and wedding bookings, including a Ray White Real Estate conference at the end of this week.

But accommodation bookings reached the point last week where the resort recorded zero occupancy.

It is understood the resort's materials and receiving departments and the recently revamped spa have closed. Only a handful of gardeners are left to maintain the golf course and extensive landscaping.

The six guests believed to be currently occupying rooms are all Queensland Nickel employees.

"It can't keep bleeding like this,'' a staffer told the Daily.
