Council urging people to take the bus to Anzac dawn service

DAMAGE caused by Cyclone Marcia at the Rockhampton Gardens has meant that car parking for the 2015 Anzac Day Dawn Service will be extremely limited.

But Rockhampton Regional Council and Sunbus have the answer…take the bus!

To ease parking congestion, Sunbus will provide a free Park and Ride bus service with pickups at selected locations throughout Rockhampton.

Chair of Rockhampton Regional Council's ANZAC Day Committee, Cr Rose Swadling said the free bus service of previous years had been expanded not only to cater for increased interest in the centenary of Anzac year but also because of the limited availability of parking at the gardens.

"Because of the damage at the Botanic Gardens from Cyclone Marcia, there is very limited parking available at the gardens," she said.

"With expected increased attendance and some changes this year to the traffic arrangements there, it makes sense to leave your car at any of several convenient locations and catch the bus," she said.

Members of the public can catch a free Sunbus to the Rockhampton pre-Dawn Service the following locations:

All buses depart Bunnings car park (depart 3.15 and 3.30am):
Route 1 Northside Plaza, Kern Arcade car park bus stop, Allenstown Plaza, Botanic Gardens.
Route 2 Northside Plaza, City Centre Plaza, Showgrounds (main entrance bus stop), Botanic Gardens.

Buses will return at approximately 5.30am. Limited space is available for wheelchairs. Phone 4936 2133 to book a wheelchair space. No bookings are necessary for regular seating.

The pre-dawn service commences at 4.27am.

Streets closed - Pre Dawn Service
Spencer Street between Agnes Street and Anne Streets and Anne Street at the intersection of Penlington Street will be closed to vehicular traffic between 3am and 6am on Anzac Day. SES Volunteers will direct cars to car parks.
