Man turns to ice after losing job

WHEN police pulled over a black Mazda on October 12, they saw the passenger door open and an item thrown out.

It turned out to be a glass pipe, but that wasn't all.

The driver, Benjamin John Bowler, had the drug ice in the console of the vehicle and told police he had planned on smoking it.

Bowler faced Rockhampton Magistrates Court last week on two charges including possessing a dangerous drug and utensil.

The 32-year-old was found with .3grams of the drug, and the court heard it had been his passenger who decided to throw the glass pipe out of the window.

Duty Lawyer William Prizeman told the court Bowler smoked the drug because he had been made redundant.

Magistrate Cameron Press told Bowler ice is a serious drug and those smoking it need to get counselling.

"Methamphetamine is a dangerous drug and a scourge in our society," Mr Press said.

Bowler was sentenced to 10 months' probation and convictions were recorded.
