CQ braces for flash flooding

Central Queensland should brace for possible flash flooding and damaging wind gusts today as the area is expected to feel the affects of ex-tropical cyclone Olga.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued the warning at 4.50am for people in the Central West, Central Coast, Whitsundays, Central Highlands and Capricornia.

It’s expected to impact between Longreach and Emerald by this afternoon before drifting slowly southwest on Monday.

Rockhampton will be hit with heavy rainfall and Yeppoon has had reports of destructive winds this morning.

The Landsborough Highway, 30km west of Barcaldine is currently closed due to water across the roadway.

Police said to remind motorists and members of the public of the hazardous and unpredictable nature of flood waters and the dangers associated with storm debris and road washouts.

The State Emergency Service this morning advised people in affected flood areas to secure loose outdoor items, beware of fallen trees and powerlines and avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.

Contact the SES on 132 500 for emergency assistance if required.
