CQ muso counts country singer Keith Urban in his friends
MUSICIAN and Central Queensland resident Brad Hooper calls country singer Keith Urban a friend.
The two musos first met when Keith was just 16 years old. Today, Brad is 55 and Keith is 45.
"He's called me up on to the stage a few times throughout his career when I have been a member of the audience at his concerts," Brad said.
"He is a fantastic guitarist and a great singer and just a brilliant bloke.
"And that's how we first met I guess; we were both playing guitar and like most guitar players we admired each other's style and became firm friends.
"So, if I'm at one of his concerts he calls me on to the stage to play my Fender Strat."
The last time his famous mate summoned him on to the stage was in 2009 when Keith played at the entertainment centre.
And Brad said he will get the chance to play his guitar every night for the next nine nights around the campfires and pubs as part of a Variety Club meet for RVs and caravans.
About 30 members left their home towns, including Rockhampton, and drove off to Warwick before taking the next nine days to drive to Nindigully where the fundraising event will end.
"This is a smaller event than the Variety Bash and it's just for RVs and caravans," Brad said.
"But it has still raised a decent amount of money for the charity.
"And of course the best thing for me is I will get to belt out a few numbers around the campfire - whether the club members like it or not."
