CQ’s best and brightest get together to spread ideas at TEDx

WHILE psychologist Dan Banos might be known for his work in mental health, his position on psychiatric medication might surprise you.

Mr Banos is one of nine speakers to address the TEDx Rockhampton event on May 30, in a talk entitled Eight Principles to Achieve Optimum Mental Health.

"I will talk about achieving optimum mental health without the use of traditional medications," he said.

"A large percentage of people suffering from a mental illness can improve their quality of life through other strategies away from the medicinal pathway."

Mr Banos promotes his meticulous view of children, youth and family health psychology through administering psychometric tests to support the assessment of an individual's cognitive capacity.

"Medication has a place and time but participation in all levels of decision-making is fundamental to the improvement of mental health," he said.

"My TED talk will help spread the idea of modernisation in the mental health industry."

The Rockhampton event, to be held at the Empire Apartment Hotel from 4pm, will feature thought-provoking speeches of no longer than 18 minutes about poetry, human behaviours, the creative mind and shaping destiny.

Curator Jason Foss said the event would see 100 of Central Queensland's best and brightest thinkers come together for an afternoon of "ideas worth spreading".

"This is an exciting chance for the people of CQ to come forward and display the abundance of talent and exceptional thinkers in the region," he said.

"TEDx is a powerful opportunity for our community to collaborate on issues that really matter, put forward ideas and inspire a future of innovation."

The TEDx (Technology, Entertainment and Design) revolution has attracted international attention with heavyweights Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Sheryl Sandberg, Richard Dawkins and Jane Goodall helping promote the spreading of ideas.

With only a handful of attendee places available for the Rockhampton event, make sure you don't miss out.

Tickets on sale from tomorrow at www.TEDxRockhampton.com.
