Cricket making a sweep in the region
KEEN cricketers are hoping to ignite a resurgence of cricket in the region thanks to an upcoming social competition.
The Callide Dawson Cricket Association is hosting a social, round robin, seven-a-side cricket competition, open to all players, in a bid to encourage increased participation in the region.
Callide Dawson Cricket Association president Justin Elliott said he had been a part of this social competition for about 15 years and he encouraged anyone to have a crack.
“We use it to encourage new people to play cricket and to find out we are sociable and we want to encourage people to play in our competition,” Elliott said.
“Everyone enjoys themselves and it lets kids play, which we encourage.”
Elliott said competitive senior cricket had almost diminished in the Banana Shire to the point that there was no senior grade at all this summer, a far cry from when there were reportedly stacks of senior teams in the area.
Doing his best to keep the sport alive, Elliott is part of the Dawson Valley Taipans, which is made up of players from Theodore, Moura, Baralaba and Biloela who play senior cricket in Rockhampton.
“We’d like to see cricket in the Callide Dawson Valley but we understand we need the people to play and run the competition,” Elliott said.
“Reports from a number of years ago were that there were two grades of senior cricket, with at least 10 teams in each grade, which dwindled down to three last year.
“We’re trying to keep a committee going so we’re ready straight away for when cricket comes back to the region, and this social competition is the first step.”
The first 12 over game gets under way at 12.30pm, with the finals scheduled to be played under lights in the evening.
Some added rules to play include: A shortened three-four step bowling run-ups, no LBW, a smaller field and everyone bowls except the wicket keeper.
Teams can have more than seven players but only seven are allowed to play each game.
Team nomination is $90, due by November 29.
