Former council worker and wife on corruption charges

A FORMER employee of a North Queensland council and his wife have appeared in a Brisbane court for the first time on corruption charges relating to a $120,000 contract.

Rohana Samarasekera, 71 and his 52-year-old wife Sumi Sekera were charged with official corruption by the Crime and Corruption Commission last month.

According to court documents, Samarasekera held a position with Etheridge Shire Council which put him in charge of recommending contractors and processing tenders for engineering and maintenance work.

It is alleged he corruptly obtained a $120, 604 benefit for his wife between October 2013 and November 2016 by recommending company Green Tech Asia Pty Ltd for a contract in Georgetown.

He is also charged with stealing police handcuffs in Charters Towers in September last year.

The pair did not enter pleas to the charges in court this morning, and the case was adjourned to December 11.

Another man, named in court documents as Glen Tucker, is charged alongside the pair, but his case was not in court today.
