AN Innisfail man mauled by a crocodile after jumping into the Johnstone River has boasted he blew the proceeds of a TV interview on "drugs and bitches" before being busted by police allegedly trying to steal a car.

Lee de Paauw, 18, gained international infamy in March when he downed "10 cups" of cask wine and took a drunken plunge into the crocodile-prone river to impress a girl before being attacked by a 4m animal.

His arm was broken in two places but he managed to get away by punching and eye-gouging the reptile.

"I started to tell them about how backpackers are more likely to get eaten by a crocodile than Australians, so we decided to go down to the river and test the theory," he told the TV station.

Despite being urged to donate the interview proceeds to those who were involved in his rescue, the Cairns Post understands the banana farm worker told authorities the money is now gone and was spent on "drugs and bitches".
