Cronulla begging for sponsor and now coach

CRONULLA is officially sponsorless and now coachless after Peter Sharp walked out the door five days after pulling off the best comeback win in the NRL club's history against Brisbane last weekend.

The embattled club - still at the centre of ASADA's ongoing drug probe - tore up the contract of its star player Todd Carney on Monday after a lewd photograph of him urinating into his own face went viral on social networking sites over the weekend.

Whether the Carney furore tipped Sharp over the edge or he was reacting to a public spray by Cronulla and NSW Origin captain Paul Gallen who last week claimed he was not giving "100%" is unclear.

But his decision to quit has left the club searching for a stand-in coach before its big clash with defending premier Sydney Roosters at the weekend.

Former Canberra premiership-winning coach and current Kangaroos mentor Tim Sheens is already reported to have knocked back a desperate approach from the troubled club to take the reins for the remaining 10 games of 2014.

Sharp made it clear after Gallen launched into him last week he had been very reluctant to take over the head coaching job after it was offered to him in the wake of Shane Flanagan's suspension arising from ASADA's investigations.

A popular figure within rugby league circles, Sharp said yesterday he had decided to quit in the best interests of the club and for himself.

"I hope the players can fulfil their potential and finish the season on a positive note," he said.
