Random attack at pet store
A ROCKHAMPTON pet store owner locked customers inside yesterday as an out-of-control man allegedly threw fence palings at the shop’s windows.
A young couple, customers at the store, were the man’s apparent target in what they said was an attack on them and their car.
Onlookers watched the alleged offender, a Koongal man, 36, brandishing a pair of scissors, then urinate on and stab at the couple’s car which was parked on Elphinstone Street.
The couple, who asked not to be identified, said they were walking into Neptune’s Aquarium & Pet Food Supplies on the corner of Elphinstone and Berserker streets about 9am when they passed the man on the footpath.
“The next thing he came in to the store with a pair of scissors and said you’ve got four flat tyres,” the rattled young woman said.
“He left then he came back and threw the scissors at us.”
The woman said those in the store had to lock themselves in as the man left.
He returned with fence palings, which he allegedly hurled at the shop windows.
“It was all a bit random!” she said.
An attendant at an Elphinstone Street chemist said the alleged suspect had walked in and purchased a pair of scissors from the establishment.
She said when she saw him start attacking the car across the street she called police.
The suspect was apprehended by police behind the Mitre 10 hardware store on Elphinstone Street and taken into custody.
Yesterday as police interviewed witnesses to the attack, the couple, who said they had been left with two flat tyres, were inspecting their vehicle for other damage.
The man has been charged with wilful damage and public nuisance and will appear in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on January 8.
