Ricciardo facing Brazil penalty

DANIEL Ricciardo is expecting to take another grid penalty at the Brazilian GP after his engine failure in Mexico.

Renault, Red Bull's engine suppliers, endured a torrid Mexican GP with Ricciardo among a plethora of drivers to retire from the race - despite his team attempting to guard against the problems by installing new engine parts ahead of the Sunday.

The failure of a brand new MGU-H unit stopped Ricciardo within five laps and the Australian is resigned at Interlagos to Red Bull having to install an eighth MGU-H of 2017, which would trigger a 10-place demotion from where he qualifies.

"[A penalty is] likely at this stage," Ricciardo told reporters on Thursday.

"We could maybe avoid it but it's probably going to put us at a risk again of maybe not finishing. We tried to avoid it last week but it still didn't happen.

"It's likely. We probably won't have a big one, but if it is it could be a 10 place. If that's the case the plan is to start the race in 11th [by topping qualifying]!

"We are going to discuss it but if they say 'you've got 10 per cent chance of finishing the race with this thing', I'll want to change it. If they are kind of like 50-50 I'd take the risk, but I have the feeling it's less than a 50 per cent chance."

Unreliability has now stopped Ricciardo's car in the last two races, his first successive DNFs since 2013 when he was at Toro Rosso.
