Darling Downs man in custody after punching, biting police

A DALBY man is in custody after allegedly punching and biting a police officer during an altercation north of the town Friday night.

Sergeant Dave Tierney of Dalby Police said officers were called to a fight between two brothers at a private residence in Kaimkillenbun about 8.25pm Friday.

As the two police officers from Dalby and one from Jandowae tried to break up the fight, one of the combatants, a 33-year-old man, turned on police and threw a number of punches some of which struck one of the officers in the head.

He then allegedly bit the officer on the hand and tried to smear blood on him, Sgt Tierney said.

Police believe the man may have been under the influence of the drug "ice" at the time.

The other brother, aged 38, then allegedly became threatening towards the Jandowae officer and tried to intervene as police were arresting his brother.

The bitten police officer also sustained knee and ankle injuries during the struggle and was taken to Dalby Hospital where he received treatment for his injuries.

One of the other officers sustained an elbow injury.

The 33-year-old man from Dalby was charged with four counts of serious assault of police and assault occasioning bodily harm.

He has been remanded in custody and will appear in Dalby Magistrates Court on Monday morning.

His brother, a 38-year-old Kaimkillenbun resident, was charged with obstructing police and was bailed to appear in Dalby Magistrates Court on October 20.
