Day sets sights on final-round showdown
GOLF: Former world No.1 Jason Day would love nothing better than a last-round shootout with Jordan Spieth at the Australian Open teeing off in Sydney on Thursday.
Day is playing on home soil for the first time in four years and alongside the American is favourite to win the Stonehaven Cup at the The Australian Golf Club.
The Aussie will launch his bid for a first national title early Thursday morning with Spieth teeing off just after 11am (AEST).
The pair famously went head to head for the US PGA Championship two years ago when Day finally broke through for his first major championship after three runner-up finishes.
On that occasion the Queenslander shot 20-under par, a record total for a major tournament as he claimed the Wanamaker Trophy at Whistling Straits.
He would love another chance to go up against the reigning Australian Open and British Open champion on the final day.
"I would love to play with Spieth (in the) last group on Sunday; that would be the greatest thing," Day said after playing the pro-am on Wednesday alongside tennis great Lleyton Hewitt, Australia rugby sevens captain Ed Jenkins and comedian Andy Lee.
"He (Spieth) had some tremendous finishes here in the Australian Open. He's won twice," Day said.
"At the Australian Golf Club, it's kind of suited his eye."
