Deadly bombing hits Syrian capital

A SUICIDE bomber has struck Syria's capital, Damascus, killing 26 people and wounding dozens more, state media said.

The bomber blew himself up at 10:55am (local time) on Friday in the historic Midan quarter in a crowded area near a school, interior minister Lieutenant General Mohammad al-Shaar was quoted as saying by the SANA news agency.

The news agency says 63 people have been injured.

Angry residents were at the scene shouting and denouncing the bombing as the work of "terrorists".

The Syrian government blamed a similar bombing in Damascus two weeks ago on Al Qaeda.
