Deafness shutting mum out of her life

SINGLE mother of two Kisha Leigh went completely deaf two months ago and life has been hell ever since.

Ms Leigh is desperate to hear the voices of her teenage children Matthew, 15, and Taylor, 14, again.

Ms Leigh started going deaf in February but things improved when Connect Hearing Gladstone's Alan Fort gave her $10,000 hearing aids for free.

But since then her hearing has worsened; she has become completely deaf and her doctor said the only option was a cochlear implant that could take two to three years.

She said she doesn't know how she will last that long.

"The past two months have been hell," she said.

She can still talk but needs the conversation written down to be able to follow along.

"The kids are starting to feel the pressure. I can't even speak to my mum who lives three hours away. It is starting to get a hold of the kids.

"It's hard when they have a problem and can't tell me. They're more like the parents," she said.

Matthew finds it hard to tell his mum how his day is and how he is feeling.

"I just want to tell her I love her and tell her everything that is happening," he said.

"She doesn't enjoy stuff like she used to and doesn't go out and see her friends anymore."

Every morning Taylor sets several alarms at 3.45am so she can wake her mother for work at Silver Grill.

At work she has to get the customers to write down their orders making it hard to keep up her customer service.

At home, the children paying the bills over the phone.

The children are both working themselves, Matthew at Hungry Jacks and Taylor at McDonald's.

Kisha's friend, Claire Mortimer said she would pay the $30,000 for the implant if she could afford it.

"She is such a hard working and lovely person something should be done to help her," she said.

"The kids are being forced to grow up too quickly."
