Denis Keeffe missing State of Origin game due to high prices

HE'S a self-confessed State of Origin addict, but due to high ticket prices, Rockhampton's Denis Keeffe is bowing out from going to the 100th game.

It will be one of only a handful the CEO of the CQ NRL Bid and CQ Capras has missed in the series history.

Keeffe said with more than 7000 tickets still available for the iconic game next week, the game would suffer significant embarrassment as cameras circling Suncorp Stadium revealed to millions of viewers many empty seats.

The biggest issue is the "affordable" seats of about $80 each were sold within hours of tickets going on sale.

As of yesterday morning, the next cheapest ticket was $180.

Origin legend Wally Lewis yesterday reportedly said if one was to put a finger on the last time a State of Origin game was unable to be sold, "you're going back 25 years, minimum".

Lewis said it was quite an embarrassing moment for Queensland Rugby League.

"Rugby league is a working man's game," Keeffe said. "I think the prices are too high."

He believes part of the problem could be attributed to a marketing strategy by the QRL which involved a fairly big membership deal titled Maroon Crusade.

"As soon I as I saw those prices, I lost interest," Keeffe said.

He said it was more targeted at corporate than the average punter.

This is certainly far from the first games held in Sydney in the early 1980s, in which Keeffe and 20 of his mates would hire a bus to go from North Shore to China Town for a meal, then the Sydney Cricket Grounds for the game and followed by a pub crawl.

"I've hardly missed a game," Keeffe said. "I'm absolutely addicted."
