Descendant of former PM among Palmer's party candidates

THE great granddaughter of a former prime minister was among nine Palmer United Party candidates announced on Friday to contest New South Wales seats.

Lyndal Harris, a descendant of Australia's seventh PM Billy Hughes, has been endorsed to run in the south coast seat of Gilmore on September 14.

PUP also announced candidates for the north coast seats of Richmond and Cowper, but the party is yet to announce a candidate for the neighbouring seat of Page.

Orthopedic surgeon Phil Allen has been selected to take on Labor's Justine Elliot in Richmond, while former RAAF pilot Rod Jeanneret will take on Coalition frontbencher Luke Hartsuyker in Cowper.

The other candidates are registered nurse Kate McGill in Dobell, security consultant Paul Graves in Berowra, freelance writer May King in Throsby, former company director Christopher Buttel in Chifley and businesswoman Bronwyn Reid in Charlton.

Party leader Clive Palmer said NSW had been "let down" by the major parties.

"It's time for a change to end the Labor-Coalition duopoly," he said.

PUP, which plans to field contest all 150 lower house seats, has now pre-selected in more than 30 seats.

Mr Palmer, who himself is contesting the Sunshine Coast seat of Fairfax, will reveal the identity of more candidates in Brisbane on Saturday morning.

Earlier this month he revealed former rugby league great Glenn Lazarus was leading the party's Senate ticket in Queensland.
