TWO youth detainees are facing additional charges for climbing on top of a building at the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre after cutting a hole through the roof.

A spokeswoman for Child Safety Minister Di Farmer said the situation was "managed" and the safety of those at the centre was the priority.

The youths ran around shirtless on the roof, refusing to come down for several hours.

After a tense stand-off the two males were safely removed from the Wacol detention centre roof and taken back into custody.

It is unknown what the youths used to cut the roof, or what caused the display.

Investigations into the incident are continuing.
