Determination pays off for Central Queensland apprentices

IT'S a male-dominated field, but Erica Lucas was determined to take up a mechanical engineering trade.

Now an apprentice at Aurizon, Erica was recently named as the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year at the Central region finals of the Queensland Training Awards.

Erica's passion to study a trade was sparked by Year 10 work experience and an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander engineering camp.

Fellow CQ TAFE-trained student Brodie Millan followed in his father's footsteps to take up an apprenticeship at Ergon Energy after high school.

The day Brodie started with the company marked the 35-year anniversary of his father's employment.

"In 2008 my sister built her first home and my father wired and fitted the electricity," Brodie said.

"I assisted and observed my father during the installation and decided that I wanted to follow a similar career path."
