Developer told to hold off on Caloundra hotel after Sekisui

A LONG-term Caloundra resident is looking to transform old buildings in Bulcock St into a dynamic new 10-storey hotel with a retail shopping centre, commercial precinct and rooftop terrace.

But Graham McPherson has been dissuaded by Sunshine Coast Council from submitting his application for the 6118sq m site after the controversial Sekisui decision.

Like the Japanese develop, Mr McPherson's application is outside the Sunshine Coast Council's town plan.

Unlike Sekisui, Mr McPherson is looking to develop in the heart of an existing CBD and in an area near existing high-rise.

Mr McPherson, 71, said he was ready to lodge the application but had been advised to "wait until next year when they adjust the town plan".

Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle said the council was "only focused on developing Maroochydore".

"I don't believe the council is focusing anywhere else but Maroochydore," Mr McArdle said.

"(Caloundra) keeps falling behind other areas that are growing. This is not good economically or socially.

"We need to move with the times or we become part of history.

"I'd like the discussion (on this development) to start happening soon.

"It doesn't mean we adopt the changes, but if you don't consider them, you become yesterday."

After "spending a lot of time talking to agents," he came up with the idea and concept plans for a luxury 80-room hotel.

"There is nothing in Caloundra like it," he said.

But before he can go and find a hotel to agree to a long-term lease on the site, he has to have council approval.

"Everyone in council I talk to is supportive, but they all tell me it is outside the town plan and I have to wait till they sit down and review the plan.

"This is the only thing that is stopping me."

Divisional councillor Tim Dwyer said he was aware of the concept plan.

"I look forward to progressing planning for the Caloundra CBD and taking the outcomes of this planning to the community for their input," Cr Dwyer said

"A new hotel in the CBD would be a desired outcome.

"I believe we can facilitate investment and development in the CBD for the benefit of the wider community."
