Dissapointment for racegoers

THERE'S disappointment for Rockhampton racegoers with the cancellation of racing at Callaghan Park this afternoon.

The sand track at Callaghan Park is good for most weather conditions but was unable to contend with the dumping the area received since Christmas Day.

Rockhampton Jockey Club chief executive Denis Cox expressed the club’s disappointment at being forced to cancel, but when the track was inspected by stewards yesterday morning a decision had to be made.

With the track having received about 60 mm of rain and the forecast for more wet weather it was inevitable that the decision was made not to race.

Cox said Callaghan Park would be open today for televised meetings as the race day is a part of the build up for the New Year celebrations.

The next race meeting scheduled for the venue is January 8.
