TOUGH DECISIONS: How often do we hear about elderly drivers jumping on the accelerator instead of the brake? FRANK REDWARD

Do you have the courage to take your parents off the road?

AS FAR as parent/offspring discussions go, you may think the most difficult discussion you'll ever have is going to be about the birds and the bees.

But for many of us, there'll be another much more difficult talk to be had - it's the one with our parents about when it's time to give up driving.

In my elderly relative's case, it was the inevitable result of three crashes in a fairly short period. Luckily the first two were minor, but the third crash she drove straight through a stop sign to T-bone another car.

Both cars were write-offs but thankfully injuries were minor. It was clear our family needed to "have the conversation".

It wasn't a pleasant conversation, and we didn't enjoy having to deliver the message.

We were blunt: "You need to give up driving before you kill yourself, or someone else".

Fortunately, common sense prevailed, and my relative agreed to hand in her licence. The fact there was no longer a car to drive certainly made her decision easier.

Would I do it again if I had to? Absolutely. I look at it as my part in improving road safety.

What would you do in the same situation?
