Do you know a local legend?

MURWILLUMBAH'S IGA Supermarket has joined a search across northern NSW and Queensland for unsung heroes.

The central Murwillumbah store is taking part in the IGA group's Local Legends awards, which will highlight the work of an unsung hero in the community.

Previously known as the Unsung Heroes Awards, the initiative aims to recognise eight locals from around the NSW Northern Rivers and Queensland who are contributing to their local community in areas such as fundraising, volunteer work and other community support initiatives.

Nominations opened this week and IGA is encouraging people to nominate anyone they feel deserves to be rewarded.

IGA Murwillumbah owner Brett Bugg said his store was participating.

"It's a campaign that's run nationally," he said.

"It's designed to get down to the grassroots level.

"It's renamed from the old local heroes award and designed to get the unsung heroes of the local community some publicity and highlight what they have done."

Mr Bugg said the campaign matched IGA's annual community chest fundraising.
