Dog owners set to take on council in court battle

OWNERS of Bruce the bull mastiff will head to the courts late next month in an attempt to overturn a notice from Ipswich City Council for the dog's destruction.

Denmark Hill resident Kev Thomas said a date had been set for the matter to go to the Queensland Civil Administration Tribunal on November 28.

The family's Facebook page Save Bruce has attracted more than 6000 followers supporting their case to have their pet returned.

The dog has been impounded since council officers seized it in August after it bit a meter reader who walked past four warning signs and two gates to access the electricity meter in the backyard.

Mr Thomas has said he offered to meet any further requirements from council to improve Bruce's enclosure in order to secure his return and had been declined a meeting with his local councillor Andrew Antoniolli.

Cr Antoniolli, Council Health and Community Safety Committee chairman, said he had declined the meeting with Mr Thomas because council had offered every assistance to the family and they had shown a lack of empathy for the man attacked.

"I do not see any point in discussing this matter further with a person who is actively promoting the victim bashing through Facebook and actively trying to bully council via social media to back down on its responsibility to protect the public from a dangerous dog," Cr Antoniolli said.

One reader contacted The QT to back the family's call for a change to the State Government's dangerous dog laws, saying her dog was listed as dangerous after it was attacked by another dog, but would not be named for fear of retribution from the council.
