Country musician will bring Doris Day’s story to the stage

DORIS Day was one of Hollywood's golden stars.

Aussie country music sensation, Melinda Schneider will be bringing Doris Day's story to the stage when her Melinda Does Doris show hits the Pilbeam Theatre on June 8.

"I love performing to regional audiences because they're real people," Melinda said.

Melinda has a special connection to Rockhampton.

"My mum was born in Rocky; in Dawson Road," she added.

"I feel like I have a bit of a link to Rocky."

Rockhampton played a part in Melinda's 2004 tune, Real People.

"I actually shot the video clip for my song Real People in Rockhampton…I mention Rockhampton in the song," she said.

But her favourite part of the show was meeting people afterwards.

"Nothing makes me happier than coming to regional areas, like Rocky, to do my thing and get to speak to everyone after the show," Melinda said.

The 'Melinda Does Doris' show will include 26 of Doris Day's classic songs, performing one of her most beloved tunes, Que Sera Sera in addition to songs from her biggest films. "I'll be telling the amazing story of Doris Day's life," Melinda explained.

It's a story that fascinates the award-winning singer and one which she loves telling people.

"It's a really emotional show, it makes people happy," she said. "I make them laugh, I make them cry, I take them on an emotional journey. Nobody really knows behind that beautiful, happy, girl next door image she actually had a very tumultuous life with four terrible marriages.

Melinda said she admired Doris. "Doris always put on a happy face and just got on with it, no matter what was going on with her personal life," she said.

"She's a great singer, a wonderful actress, an incredible dancer and comedian and a likeable, beautiful person; I admire all of that…but the fact that she's just reached 92 and she's outlived everyone, that's the biggest inspiration for me."
